Things You Never Knew (And Probably Didn’t Want to Know) About ME!

‘Ello friends.  I know I am bad.  It has been awhile since I last wrote.  But, just like getting back into an exercise or food habit, it takes time.  Therefore, I want to post little things throughout the week just to get me back in the blogging habit.  I really miss it. I do.  I think after 6 years of attending journalism school I sadly needed a break from the written word.  But, now I don’t want to be on a “break” from it.  I miss words, vowels, nouns, adjectives, and of course abbreviations.  So, for my first assignment, here is 10 Things you never knew (and probably didn’t want to know) about me!  Ready?  Set?  Read!

10. I have small hands (but you know what that means: I have a big heart).  Seriously though.  My hands create so many problems for me.  Example 1:  When I do the dishes or cook, I break a dish at least.  Out of 6 wine glasses that the boy gave me, ONE remains.  It is super sad that my little hands can’t handle (pun intended) doing the dishes.  Example 2:  I can’t eat or drink without spilling on myself.  I am not kidding.  I need someone to give me a bid half the time because my hands can’t manage to do the simple job of carrying food to mouth.

9.   I can’t open a twist off bottle.  Whether it is a beer bottle, IBC rootbeer or Smart water bottle, I need assistance.  It is very sad and will slow me down if I ever become a bartender.

8. When I get sick all I want to eat are carbs.  Bread, popcorn, sandwiches, bagels, etc. are drawn to me like a moth to flame.  In fact, I am eating popcorn right now and I have a cold.

7. When magazines that are addressed to my apartment but not me end up in my mailbox I tend to read them and then return them back to the mail room area of my building.  I feel if I return it, its not a problem.  And it is technically addressed to my apartment so it is just the person’s fault for not editing there shipping address form.

6. I haven’t gone to the gym since last summer.  I haven’t ran since that 5k on Thanksgiving which was horrific.  Yay for yoga and its magical benefits.

5. I HATE CLEANING. HATE WITH A PASSION.  But, every so often I get the urge to clean and it is like a cleaning binge.  The boy says I have “blackout cleaning sprees” because I tend to throw things out and put things away but then I don’t remember where I placed anything after the spree.  Usually, it’s his stuff that goes MIA so I can see his annoyance from this.

4. If I could eat one food the rest of my life it would be pizza, preferably topped with jalapenos, sausage and lots of Thai chili hot sauce.

3. If I hosted a dinner party and could invite anyone, I would invite: Anthony Bourdain, Hunter S. Thompson, Bob Dylan, Paul Newman and of course my girl, Lucille Ball.  I think it would be one hell of a bash.

2. If I could have anyone’s job I would choose Padma Lakshmis as host of Top Chef.  I would love to have 3 wardrobe changes per episode and eat delcious ass food.

1. My resolution for this year is to grow as a person and live each day with grace and compassion.  It is difficult sometimes (because I am human)  but I think attaining to be a better person is a wonderful goal to have.

Anything I should know about you?

Cheers,

Lo

Dear Yoga

I remember walking into my first official yoga class when I was 15.  My mom and I went to what would now be considered “hot yoga flow.”  Back then I just thought it was called torture.  I was close to passing out halfway through too many of what looked liked push-ups and I hated the fact my mother looked more flexible than me–a 15 year old Varsity swimmer.  In fact the only memory I have of that class was the foot long turkey sandwich from Subway which I ate in less than 5 minutes immediately after because I was that hungry from the physicality of the practice.  Who knew yoga was hard?

Fast forward 6 years.  I was a Senior in college and running 30 miles a week. I read that yoga was a great way to stretch after a run so I began doing a few at home sessions from this website called, Yoga Download.  Besides the sparce class at home, I also enrolled a class in college which focused on Anatomy, Yoga and Pilates.  However, yoga still didn’t keep my attention and I seriously hated/ dreaded the ab portions of the classes.  So instead of continuing with yoga, I stuck with running.  Running was familiar and I loved improving with each mile I ran.  To me, yoga would never be my thing.

Now here I am. It is 2012.  I am on my way to finishing yoga teacher training and going to yoga 4-5 times a week.  I don’t run anymore.  SHOCKER! I know, right?  I was a running junkie.  You know the type: runners who purchased new shoes every season, only wore Nike outfits, and ran in sub zero degree Chicago weather because I “couldn’t miss a workout.”  I ran a half marathon, a 15k, a 10k, and six 5ks.  I ran so much that it stopped being fun and started becoming a chore.  I got anxious if I missed a run.  I would knock out HIIT (high intensity interval trainings) in 20 minutes on a treadmill, if that’s all the time I had.  My life revolved around running and not in a good way.  Last year, when I was visiting my parents, I couldn’t work out in any of the neighboring gyms because I had used up every single guest pass possibility that was offered.  All that was left for me was either a Jillian Michaels dvd or a yoga class.  I figured, what the hell, I’ll try it again and be open to the possibility.  That is when my life changed.  I went to a yoga flow class and got my butt kicked (in a good way).  I walked out feeling lighter, happier and confident. I was smiling ear to ear.  It didn’t matter that I had no clue what a Namaskar A was; I just followed along.  This was the moment I stopped allowing running to rule my life and I finally let yoga into my heart.  Once back in Chicago, I began working at a studio in order to take classes and build my practice.  SO now here I am.  A yoga junkie for a year.  Now, the only working out I do involves Surya A’s, B’s, Inversions, Backbends, Balancing postures and Savasana. I feel stronger. I feel healthier.  I don’t base my plans or day around whether I got a workout in, because now I choose to do yoga when I want, where I want.

My journey to yoga wasn’t easy.  It took many tries and a lot of patience.  But, I am in a happier place than ever before.

Thanks yoga for everything.

Shanti!

Lora

Musings on Life

These past 6 weeks of my life have been seriously eye opening.  Imagine you are at Thanksgiving dinner and you fill your plate with so much turkey, stuffing and pecan pie that everything begins to mesh together and flavors combine.  That is my life at the moment.  My schedule consists of raising a puppy, potty training a puppy, working twice a week, going to school twice a week, going to Yoga teacher training Saturdays and Sundays, going to at least one workshop for yoga a week, learning Sanskrit, practice teaching yoga (to my dog), attempting 5 yoga classes a week, and doing homework that never seems to ever end.

But, after the last few weeks of seriously burning myself out and stressing over EVERYTHING that needed to be done, I have had enough.  I need ME time.  I need a DATE night.  I need to see my friends.  I need to give myself some sanity by going out to dinner with my boyfriend.  I need to see my best friends at dinner and gossip over silly things, I need to snuggle with my puppy and watch trash TV.  Lately my priorities have changed and I am coming to accept that fact.  But instead of just stressing out and constantly working, I am going to work on balance–something we always hear about in yoga.

Once December hits, I will have a Masters in Journalism, and hopefully be completing my teacher training and receiving my 200 hours RYT certificate.  And rather than race to the finish I am going to take my time and ensure that I am enjoying every moment of my current journey.

When I get stressed out I remind myself of the quote from Nelson Mandela, “Everything seems impossible until it’s done.”  This man’s inspiration rings so true to me right now.  So, tonight I am enjoying some bowling and beer with my best friends rather than sitting at my computer for another 6 hours working on a final project.  Tomorrow, I am going to read some of “How Yoga Works” (a book that I am currently reading) and practice lots of vinyasa’s during a level 2/3 yoga class which always kicks my butt.

I guess I just wanted to remind us all that no matter what you have on your life plate right now, whether it’s an overflowing turkey dinner, or a cup of soup, we have to remind ourselves to have “me” time, “friend” time, or “romantic” time.  Whether you are super busy or not we all must remember to make time for things, because going through the motions in life is not a way to live at all.

Cheers and Namaste,

Lolo

So what have I been doing lately? Trying not to pull my hair out from this little guy:

Benny’s first Fall. Playing in the leaves is becoming is favorite past time.

Benjamin Louis- aka, Benny, is our 3 month old Beagle puppy.  We spent the past two months researching dog breeds, rescue organizations and breeders.  We found Benny when he was just 7 weeks old (via GotBeagles.Org) but he was not quite ready for adoption.  His mom and dad were living in a foster family’s home when Benny and his siblings were born.  He is the runt of them all-weighing 6 pounds.  Surprisingly he was the LAST one picked for adoption! I found this shocking since he is the absolute cutest.

Our first time meeting!

He has been with us for 5 days and he has brought so much joy to our lives.

Has anyone ever raised a puppy and successfully potty trained them?  We are definitely working out the kinks that comes with being new parents.

The Little Things

This week I did something relatively cool.  I got into crow pose and was able to life both of my feet off the ground.  Sure, it was only 4 inches from the floor, but that is the first time I was in the air.  I am not the strongest in class. I am not the most flexible in class. But, to know my downward dog is the best its ever been, to know that I can chaturanga with the best of them even though I still can’t do a REAL push up, and to know that after each class I have a sense of calm while clarity washes over me, gives me smiles in deepness of my belly.  It’s the little things in life like accomplishing a new pose in yoga class, talking to my grandfather on the phone, eating pizza at 5AM because you can’t sleep, that make life just that much better.  How can we appreciate those Friday nights out with girlfriends, when we don’t have those lazy Sundays? How can we appreciate a wonderfully cooked meal if we don’t have those evenings with take out Pad Thai?  If we don’t procrastinate/rent movies like, Bridesmaids and Everything Must Go, on a school night, then how can we ever confront all of the homework that’s piling up with a fresh new approach?  When I come to my mat and set an intention for my practice it is usually something like, “I want to appreciate the little things in life more.”  As we get older and busier, we tend to forget the things in life that truly make us happy.  I recently attended my boyfriend’s 3 year old brother’s birthday party where I learned to let go and spend a few hours jumping in a bouncy house -not worrying about school, life, or other useless stresses.  When I came to my yoga mat this week, I realized I have to stop trying to be the girl next to me doing a Scorpion pose, because one day I will get there.  Sometimes, all it takes to make us relax, breath, and let go of stress is an endless sushi dinner with your best friend, a take-out Chinese dinner served along side Netflix on a Friday night, a candlelight restorative yoga class where you leave relaxed and detoxified, or even just a phone call with your momma.  I am going to make sure that when I wake up every morning,  I am going to set an intention for my day just like I  do in my yoga practice.  When I get too stressed from either dirty dishes or too much homework, I can focus back on what I want from the day and appreciate the little things in life again.

If you saw my wine rack, you'd think, "Wow, she has a lot of red wine." Well, guess what? Its a simple thing in life that really makes an evening complete.

spring rolls put a spring in my step.

best pad thai ever, from a hole in the wall next door.

P.S.  Didn’t Jenny do a fabulous job on my blog?  I am now a resident at WordPress and have a header that screams, “LO!” Muah Jenny!

What I Want From Fall

Fall is one of my favorite seasons.  I love the red, yellow and orange colors painted across my city.  I love mustard yellow Banana Republic skirts and Kelly green sweaters.  I love jumping into piles of leaves when I visit my mom and dad’s house.  I love Halloween.  I love candy corn.  I love the smell of tailgating and the sound of football fans in bars screaming at their beloved teams. I love watching Charlie Brown movies and ABC Family’s “13 days of Halloween.”

I love thinking that Christmas and New Year’s are just around the corner.  I love the beginning of a new school year and purchasing a new planner to go with the 30 other ones I have saved from my lifetime.  I love the smokey flavor of red wine on a cool evening.

Fall is a time when leaves are changing.  Skies turn darker sooner and breezes become chillier.  It’s a time when your cutie offers their jacket as you walk hand in hand to dinner, in an effort to cover those goosebumps all over your cold arms.  It’s a time when old man Winter tries to creep in but Fall, not having any of that, holds on to Summer’s warmth by bringing the occasional but inevitable hot and muggy September day.

So what do I want out of this Fall 2011?
I want to ride Hunter- my bike- as much as possible until it gets too cold to do so.  I want to order ONE pumpkin spice latte this year, since I never have ordered it before.  I want to accomplish “crow” pose in yoga and be able to go upside on my own.  I want to have a picnic on the beach while the tides are super high.  I want to take my camera on adventures and explore different neighborhoods.  I want to master cooking a pot of Texas chili.  I want to take a cooking lesson or hop on over and partake in a home beer brewing lesson—pun intended.

I know that this season, I want to breath in as much color as I can.  I know I want to take in as many new sights and experiences as I can. I want to enjoy as much time as I can with the people I love.

I just know I don’t want to be colorblind and miss out on all of the beautiful and magnetic energies unfolding around me.

Lo

An Ode To:

Good Evening my pumpkins! I hope your Labor Day weekends were full of sunshine, beer in a can, grilling up hotdogs (tofu dogs for my veg friends) and lots of laughter.  I went through a bit of a sad spell thinking that summer is now over and I can no longer where white.  Well just remember, we still have almost 3 weeks of summer lovin, and based on my beliefs, I wear what I f@c&ing want.
My Labor Day holiday was a full weekend of working, birthday partying, figuring out I am most certainly lactose intolerant, rental car driving, and having an outlet mall shopping adventure. You know the usual Americana weekend festivities–>What? ? You didn’t experiment with a fancy grilled cheese sandwich and viola! now you’re on a hard core prescription of ice cream flavored lactaid pills like me?  Woe is my life.
But forget about the lactose issues, the busy Sunday Funday at work and the long drives down I-90 highway, my weekend was really focused on my blog and thinking about how I can make it even more interesting!  Whilst I was shopping at a very chic and 40% off everything Banana Republic outlet store, where I purchased a new mustard yellow skirt and Kelly green sweater, I had a blog epiphany.  I want to write some letters to the things in my life that I am either loving or hatin on– food, clothes, boys, people, furniture, the bug that constantly visits my apartment for a jolly good ole’ scaring—> you know, the usual twenty somethings ramblings.
So after having a mild panic attack in the Gap outlet store, which is a story for another time, I got my idea for the first post of my new blog series, An Ode To.
First up, “An Ode to: The Cobb Salad”

The Cobb salad is not a new culinary creation.  But, it is in fact brand new to me.  Believe it or not my first Cobb was this summer! My virginity was taken by a lad named Michael Diversey–well my Cobb salad virginity anyway. Michael Diversey’s is a local restaurant that has modern takes on traditional food and they also feature Trivia Tuesdays–what more could a twenty-something, pop culture loving girl ask for in a dining spot?  It wasn’t until I walked through those doors awhile back at Diversey’s, that their Cobb salad would in fact change my life.  Since this afternoon luncheon, the Cobb salad has been calling my name. Sometimes so many times that I have had a Cobb salad three times a week!  My eyes peruse menus searching for a Cobb to fill my stomach’s void.  Yes, I am now a Cobb convert.

The crisp lettuce is the perfect base for more fixings than I could ever ask for.  A hard boiled egg, fatty bacon, flavorful grilled chicken, tangy blue cheese, crunchy cucumbers, ripe tomatoes, creamy avocado all come together in flavor unison.  After its all chopped together, one bite is all it takes, and silence comes over me.  I have found my newest love….a salad that is probably the same in calories as a Whopper and fries, but in the moments I am eating, thoughts of calories and fat fly out the window because taste is what I am thinking about.  It tastes damn good and I don’t care how many miles I will have to run or how many minutes of hot yoga I will have to downward dog through, because when it comes to food I will never sacrifice flavor for lesser calories.  Who cares if my pants are a tad snugger because I just had the best salad of my life.
Now, I think I need a cigarette.
Xoxo,
Lo

A Surprising Hipster

I had no idea when I woke up at 5AM on Saturday morning (after falling asleep at 2AM) that I would be starting off one of the most fun weekends of my life (so far).
I had no idea that a 30 minute bus ride to Union Station, where a very grumpy bus driver came close to ruining my morning, would be the beginning to the most euphoric 3 days that lied ahead of me.
I had no idea an uncomfortable 5 hour Amtrak train ride where people decided to have conversations over me, talk on their cell phones and ignore their crying babies, would lead into the best moments of my summer so far.
So after 5 hours, one nasty coffee and a mini carton of Goldfish consumed, I arrived in downtown St. Louis with bags in tow. Now of course I was excited for a weekend with my brother, his girlfriend, Peter and a music festival.  But for some reason the fact that the music fest was in St. Louis didn’t excite me too much.  See, growing up in Kansas City, a trip with the family to St. Louis wasn’t as glamorous as say going on a trip to New York City. Lets face it, a trip anywhere with your family isn’t the same as a trip solo or with friends.

I guess you could say I sold my trip a little short in the beginning. I knew the music fest would be a blast, but I had no idea how cool the city of St. Louis would actually be.  I guess as a kid, I was never exposed to the cool, artsy neighborhood streets lined with record stores, vintage stores, and craft breweries.  The St. Louis that I knew as a kid was definitely NOT the city I just left a day ago. It is definitely a hipsters paradise.

Read on for my reasons as to why St. Louis is truly amazing.

Top 5 Reasons why St. Louis rocks now:
1. Craft beer.  I can’t express enough how much I love local beers.  Call me a beer snob, but I prefer knowing where my beer comes from and St. Louis is at the top of their game with some very yummy, craft beers.  Every bar we went to had almost all craft beer on draft which was the biggest and most exciting surprise of the weekend.  If you ever have a chance to drink Schlafly beer, go for it.  The coffee ale is crisp and energizing!

2. Local, organic and slow food galore!
I never in a million years would think St. Louis would be on the slow food bandwagon and also have a ton of food trucks.  One place we dined at got all their food products from within 150 miles of the place!

3.  The local music scene rocks.
4.  The festivals!!! LouFest, a music festival that features 2 days of eclectic music like Cat Power, Questlove and Tv on the Radio, wins as the cleanliest, most eco-friendly, and delicious festival I have attended.  I have never been to a music fest that elevated their food and service so much.  Free Chipotle chips and guac?  A rock wall to climb?  A Beer garden and Smoking lounge?  How about a Bahn Mi sandwich?  Yes, Lou Fest had all this and much more!  I was shocked to see a Vietnamese staple like Bahn Mi at a festival, which is like a fancy hotdog but instead filled with goose liver pate, ham, pickled vegetables with a chili oil all in a French baguette.

Questlove spinning and me having a 1 hour dance party by myself.

Tv on the Radio

Ms. Cat Power
4. The Moonrise Hotel.
The Moonrise Hotel located in the Delmar Loop district is the most fun and exciting hotel I have ever stayed in.  With a solar system theme, the Moonrise has a rooftop bar overlooking the city with amazing cocktails and scenic views.  I got a fabulous deal on Groupon for a 1-night stay here and I wish I bought more. The staff was super friendly. The environment was quirky.  The establishment was classy.  We received a free breakfast and much to my surprise it wasn’t continental.  In fact they gave us $40 to spend on food! I highly recommend giving the Moonrise a shot when/if you go to St. Louis.  The Sirachi bloody mary is entirely worth the trip here.

5. The pizza.
Now I love St. Louis style pizza.  For those unfamiliar, it is a very thin crust, topped with a mixture of cheese including the secret cheese- Provel.  However, while here we were taken to a place called Pi that featured thin and deep dish pizza.  Apparently, President Obama fell in love so much with this pizza, they are building one in D.C.—instant cool points for that one!  The restaurant is very fun, features fun toppings and has some of the best sangria I have ever drank.

Need more proof why St. Louis is the newest hipster on the block and why it should be on your vacation bucket list?
martini street art.

just a carrot outside a local and organic cafe.
The Tin Car bar with a wall of canned beers.
late night comfort food.

Patty Melt, Onion Rings and 1950′s Jukebox music.
The oldest Amoco sign which resides over a BP gas station now.

Oldest theater in Missouri with $5 movies, cheap beers and cheap popcorn.
The Arch.

This was a 4 day weekend that pretty much ruled my summer.

Now I am off to do some yoga because it has been too long and have a dinner date with my hipster GF, Miss Y Lime.

Just Do It

Sometimes you just have to be a little out of the ordinary. Wild if you will.  Sometimes you need to just tell yourself, “Life is too damn short so I’m gonna do the damn thing.”

But how, you wonder? Read on for some tips on how my friends and I truly just do the damn thing.  Some may be out of the ordinary and out of the box. But what’s life without raising our freak flags once in awhile?

First off, If you want some onion rings, order them. And own those ketchup stains that now reside all over on your face and outfit because lets face it, onion rings aren’t the easiest food to eat.  Don’t just order the mixed vegetable medley because that is what you think you “should do.”  And when people give you weird looks for being a messy eater, just smile, because you know deep down inside, they are just upset they ordered that boring side salad and not the crispy fried vegetable.
Secondly, don’t be boring and cliche when going out.  If you happen to have a few martinis and see a stranded plant in the middle of a busy street, save it! Carry him around all night in your purse until you get home to where he can safely live on your windowsill. When people stare at you oddly when you pull a plant out of your purse, in order to show the bartender that you are actually 21, just own that situation. Say, “Yeah I have a plant in my purse, so what!” because not only are you going to have the ultimate conversation starter with strangers, but you also just showed that garden dweller the best night of its life.
Thirdly, If you want to change your hair color do it. It doesn’t matter your hair was borderline damaged and dark black. If you want that red hair, make it happen.  Just make sure to snatch up a professional and amazing colorist who knows what they are doing. Oh, and be sure to set aside a few hours in your day because you will be sitting for a long period of time, reading trashy magazines discuss the latest drama on “Teen Mom.”  But, don’t worry because when you are all done you will hopefully go from looking like this:

To this:

Fourthly, If you want to take a guy out to dinner/text him first/ make the first move, then f****** do it. Why can’t a woman can’t step up to the plate once in awhile, especially since its almost 2012?  But just don’t do this all the time.  We need to have a balance in our relationships. No sugar mommas ya hear?
sushi dates.

Fifthly, (Note- I just typed Filthy! Whoops) If you want your first or 18th tattoo, go ahead and get inked!  Don’t let opinions over the art, phrase, word, placement, what have you, stop you from expressing yourself! Just make sure the parlor doesn’t scream, “dirty needles!!!” or “Hepatitis!!!” In other words, do your research! Also, whatever tattoo you choose, be positive it will keep you smiling every single day when you glance at it.

Sixthly,  If you want to dance your heart out at a club/lounge/wedding/house party/concert until your heels bleed, well then, just slap a band aid on your feet, go barefoot if you must, and keep juking!  Don’t forget, dirty martinis and $3 Jim Beam shots help the pain disappear.
Whatever you feel like doing, no matter how outside the box or how wild it is, don’t let anyone or any fear keep you from being the wild child that we all have inside of us. Because in the end, boring is not getting you anywhere in life.

So ladies I dare you tonight to put on your highest heels (even if you are already in your pajamas), blast some Foster the People, order in some onion rings, and dance your heart out until your heels bleed and stain your shoes a ketchup colored red.

When in doubt just remember to “Keep Calm and Just Do it!”

wild children.

Visitors and Staycations Part Duex

When we left off, my best friend and her friend Pat left The Windy City.  I was terribly sad because I love her so much and begged her to miss her flight and move here.  Obviously, it wasn’t going to happen then and there, so I came to terms with the fact that I would have to wait.  Me being the impatient one hates waiting.  But I know when the time is right my bestie and I will be in the same city once again. Besides, I couldn’t stay in a sad mood for long because I had more visitors coming! I couldn’t wait for my parents to arrive because not only do I love them but they are the coolest parents alive.
Remember our trips to NYC? It was filled with tequila, fancy dinners and drunken photo ops.
Once they arrived we hit up a lunch spot where I devoured the greatest chopped salad I have ever sunk my teeth into.  Follow that up with mini golf, margaritas, Mexican food and tipsy games of Scategories and you have a #Winning first night of fun!
The next day involved brunch, an architectural tour, Navy Pier Ferris wheel, bowling, drinking beers at the famed Billy Goat Tavern where Saturday Night Live got its “Cheezborger, Cheezeborger, Pepsi no Coke, Chips No Fries” skit from.

We had a fabulous Italiano dinner full of bread, olive oil, salads, pasta and pizza.  My dad and I followed dinner with a few games of darts, beers and interesting conversations with random people. I can only give you a feeling for how much fun we all had through the pictures I took. I love my parents so much and my mom has been so strong through her chemotherapy and treatment.  I can only hope that one day I can be as strong, loving and compassionate as she is. I can’t wait until I get to see my parents again back in Kansas City, which will be sooner than you think!
Do you prefer vacations or staycations?  When on a staycation what are your favorite things to do in your city?

Lo
